Shepherd Law Says Farewell | 2005 – 2020
After 15 years of dedicated service in the legal profession, I’m closing the doors of Shepherd Law.
As a young attorney, I was driven by a desire to serve. Helping people navigate the legal system was my answer to some of life’s most profound questions: Why am I here? What is my purpose? How can I serve?
In pursuit of those answers, I’ve had the privilege of representing a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds—young and old, American and foreign, black, white and hispanic.
Despite their apparent differences, all of my clients had one thing in common: their encounter with the court system was a time of great stress and vulnerability. For some, it was the darkest period of their lives. I would like to believe that my results-driven representation, strong work ethic and empathetic approach provided them some relief during those challenging times. I know it profoundly shaped both my career and my understanding of the human spirit.
Among the many cases I have handled, two stand out: United States v. White and Harper v. Cook County.
In U.S. v. White I grappled with the critical issue of free speech. This case highlighted the principle that the most vital speech to protect is often that which is not unanimously accepted or understood. It served as a reminder of our democratic principles and the importance of safeguarding our fundamental rights, even when they seem inconvenient or unpopular.
In Harper v. Cook County my work revolved around the right to bear arms. This case taught me the importance of challenging laws that are both wrong and unconstitutional. It was an intense exercise in creative litigation and tirelessly pursuing truth and justice in the face of formidable opposition.
These two cases impressed upon me the profound responsibility that comes with practicing law and the ongoing vigilance required to safeguard these core values.
Reflecting on my career, I’m reminded of the wisdom in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “to everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” As I contemplate these words and the changing seasons in my own life, it’s become clear that my season as a trial lawyer is drawing to a close.
Looking ahead, I carry with me the wisdom and growth acquired from years spent in a system that, at its best, embodies my core values of justice, wisdom and mercy. These principles, along with a continued desire to make a difference, will guide my future endeavors.
